From Pastor’s Desk: 6-22-14
Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us. – Hebrews 12:1 (NIV)
There is need for perseverance in the race that is marked out for us. The Christian life is not one of ease or comfort. In fact, history bears out the great difficulties followers of Christ have endured. Yet it is those who have gone before us who stand on either side of our running path, cheering us on. Their faithfulness gives us strength to cast off sin when we realize that others have been where we are now. Their witness empowers us to finish this great race. Perseverance necessitates development of the Fruit of the Spirit, love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control (Gal 5:22-23), which are but characteristics of God. The works of the flesh, sexual immorality, impure thoughts, eagerness for lustful pleasure, idolatry, participation in demonic activities, hostility, quarreling, jealousy, outbursts of anger, selfish ambition, divisions, the feeling that everyone is wrong except those in your own little group, envy, drunkenness, wild parties, and other kinds of sin (Gal 5:19-21), ensures that we will never desire to learn to persevere, reason being that all works of the flesh are temporal, while the fruit of the Spirit are eternal.
