Jude 1:21 (NIV) Keep yourselves in God’s love as you wait for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ to bring you to eternal life.
Note that the responsibility is on us. The challenge is to “Keep yourselves” in God’s love. Nothing can separate us from the love of God but us. One person can only love another person as much as he or she will allow. God, with all His attributes and majesty, can only love us as much as we will allow.
Strange, isn’t it, that God, in all His sovereignty, has no limitation except in the ones He created. Don’t misunderstand. He’s no less God because of us. He was, is, and always will be, God. It’s just that He can’t be the God He wants to be to us if we refuse to let Him be. Jesus said one time, “A prophet is not without honor, but in his own country, and among his own kin, and in his own house” (Mark 6:4). Follow that with verses 5-6, “…he could there do no mighty work, save that he laid his hands upon a few sick folk, and healed them. 6 And he marveled because of their unbelief…”
A safe conclusion of Jude 1:21, then, could be that while God loved and continues to love, Jesus gave and continues to give, mercy has been and always will be extended, and eternal life is the end result of reconciliation between us and God and totally available to us because of that, it is still up to us to keep ourselves in God’s love.
