Bitterness Towards Others

From Pastor’s Desk: 12-7-14

Anyone who claims to be in the light but hates a brother or sister is still in the darkness. Anyone who loves their brother and sister lives in the light, and there is nothing in them to make them stumble. – 1 John 2:9‑10 (NIV)

We only entrap ourselves when we allow our souls to be bitter toward others. There could be a good reason for our feelings, but harboring hate toward others doesn’t affect those people in the least. On the contrary, we are the ones who become imprisoned by our feelings. So bring your bitterness to the light. Talk to someone about your hurt and receive prayer for your need. God’s light can fill the dark soul and take out the obstacles around us if we will just humble ourselves. ( Dave Whitehead, Senior Pastor, GraceNYC.org)

Those we harbor bad feelings against because of words spoken, actions taken, or adverse re‑action(s), are sometimes themselves victims. It’s really hard for most people to look objectively into a situation and ascertain that the one(s) who cause hurt, anger, disappointment, etc. are but a “pawn” being used by the devil in his scheme against all of God’s people. It is so vitally important to realize and to stay focused on the fact that “we are not fighting against people made of flesh and blood, but against the evil rulers and authorities of the unseen world, against those mighty powers of darkness who rule this world, and against wicked spirits in the heavenly realms (Eph 6:12 NLT).

The next time someone hurts, angers, or disappoints you, stop and conscientiously try to look beyond the person and understand that they may be just a tool that the devil is using to hinder your spiritual growth process, and to undermine God’s plan for your life. And remember, He’s also trying to use you to the same to him or her.
