From Pastor’s Desk:
Isaiah 61:1 The Spirit of the Sovereign LORD is on me, because the LORD has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim freedom for the captives and release from darkness for the prisoners,
When Jesus stood in the temple one day it was this passage from which He read (Luke 4:18), declaring it the day Isaiah was prophesying about, that He was the Anointed One of whom he spoke.
It is in this spirit that the church is to go forth and do the same as this is the purpose of the church. It doesn’t take much looking to find some one who is poor, brokenhearted, captive, or in darkness. We, the church, share that same anointing with Christ Jesus as the answer to their problems. John said, “…you have an anointing from the Holy One… (1 John 2:20). He wasn’t referring to ministers of the gospel only, but to every Child of God. Note he was writing to “My little children…” (2:1).
Acts 1:8 substantiates that the power of the Holy Spirit is for witnessing. Unless we move among the poor, we cannot hope to spread the gospel among them. We cannot “bind up” the brokenhearted from afar. The captives will remain captive until we go where they are and deliver them. The blind have no hope of light shining into their darkness, lest we take that light to them.
The church has the anointing as Christ’s church, of which He is the Head. May we use it to effectively!
