We have come to know and have believed the love which God has for us. God is love, and the one who abides in love abides in God, and God abides in him. – 1 John 4:16 NASB
We must be very careful to exhibit TRUE love toward each other. True love sometimes exceeds what our true feelings are. If called to question we would unequivocally attest that we do love our brother/sister in the Lord. However, small acts/reactions betray us. We pride ourselves in the “big things” but fall short in the small things. True love for each other can be demonstrated by what we say, what we do, or how we react. For instance, instead of being glad someone has received something we tend to take into consideration their income, lifestyle, management skills. By that, I mean we “know” they cannot afford what they received, so we roll our eyes and take for granted they are living beyond their means, when we really don’t know the whole story.
We do great injustice to those in the household of faith by acting or reacting toward them based on what we think we know. We tend to fall into the judging realm, which is dangerous, because we usually judge another from a perspective of our strength and the others’ weakness, rarely the reverse.
Let us rejoice with one another for the things God has given each of us. Until we find the true circumstances surrounding the situation, may we extend the benefit of doubt and just assume that God has blessed and graciously provided a need in that person’ life. By so doing we will be exhibiting TRUE love!
