From Pastor’s Desk:
Luke 1:30-31 …the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary; you have found favor with God. 31 You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you are to call him Jesus.
With families probably being the same then as they are now, everyone, including relatives, friends, and acquaintances, more than likely came to see the new baby boy. One has to wonder what went through the minds of Joseph, Mary, and the shepherds as they saw the baby Jesus. Consider the visitors that would have been certain to come and see the newborn, certainly hearing of the rather strange circumstances surrounding the conception and the birth.
Some, of course, would have been among those who had difficulty understanding and believing it all. But in the minds of those who did believe the story, what must they have been thinking when they looked into His face? Did they really know who He was? Was there any way that they knew this baby was the One who was to deliver them from their sins? Heal their bodies? Calm and clear their minds of perplexity? Heal the brokenhearted? Preach deliverance to the captives? Set at liberty those who are bruised (oppressed)?
Maybe the best summation of who He was is uttered by Simeon as Joseph and Mary brought baby Jesus to the temple to be dedicated, “…mine eyes have seen thy salvation, Which thou hast prepared before the face of all people; A light to lighten the Gentiles, and the glory of thy people Israel” (Luke 2:30-32). Also, by the angels as they announced the birth of the Messiah to the shepherds, “For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord” (Luke 2:11).
Modern day summation of who He is was penned by Dottie Rambo about 1975 with her song “I Call Him Lord.”
