Just a Few Words

Sunset over Mountain RangeFrom Pastor’s Desk: 3-5-17

Ecclesiastes 5:2 Do not be quick with your mouth, do not be hasty in your heart to utter anything before God. God is in heaven and you are on earth, so let your words be few.

Just have to wonder if some folks will ever get it. Let your words be few, I mean. The old adage started by someone long ago, “It’s better to keep your mouth closed and let everyone think you’re a fool, than to open it and remove all doubt.” I say started be someone because I have seen this attributed to different people through the years. No matter who coined the phrase, it is most definitely true.

Then there is the one, probably the most used, that says “Actions speak louder than words.”

Isn’t it amazing how much trouble the mouth can get us into? On the other side it’s amazing how a few (emphasis on few) words can get us out of trouble.

JFB comments on the phrase ‘God in heaven’ by offering “Therefore He ought to be approached with carefully weighed words, by thee, a frail creature of earth.”

Adam Clarke’s comment on the phrase ‘let your words be few” this way: “Do not hasten with thy mouth; weigh thy words, feel deeply, think much, speak little.”

Considering that God knows our thoughts before we speak them, makes one wonder if when we do speak them they are what God intended for us to speak.
