And beside this, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue; and to virtue knowledge; and to knowledge temperance; and to temperance patience; and to patience godliness; and to godliness brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness charity. For if these things be in you, and abound, they make you that ye shall neither be barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. – 2 Peter 1:5-8 KJV
Love that last line! Such a great promise! However, there is that biggest little word in the English language at the beginning of the sentence; “IF these things be in you.” It takes it further than that by saying, “and ABOUND.”
Once we have gained these things (all those listed) we are most assuredly expected to do something with them. Then, and only then, shall we be fruitful in the knowledge of our Lord.
Fruitful? John 15:16 (PHILLIPS) says, “It is not that you have chosen me; but it is I who have chosen you. I have appointed you to go and bear fruit that will be lasting; so that whatever you ask the Father in my name, he will give it to you.”
Seeing that the fruit we bear should be lasting, it is incumbent on us make sure that the things (all those listed) remain intact during our life.
For without them we will bear no fruit.
