From Pastor’s Desk:
…Christ was offered once to bear the sins of many. To those who eagerly wait for Him He will appear a second time, apart from sin, for salvation. – Hebrews 9:28 NKJV
In my opinion, the key phrase in this verse is “To those who eagerly wait for Him.” Certainly, the first phrase is highly significant: “Christ was offered once to bear the sins of many.” And the phrase “He will appear a second time” is, in effect, the Blessed Hope of those who believe in and have accepted Jesus Christ as Savior. However, my key phrase focuses on those who not only believe in and have accepted Jesus Christ as Savior, realizing that He gave Himself to bear our sins, but are living in such a way as to make sure they ready for His second appearing.
The NKJV “Eagerly waiting” is translated from KJV’s “looking for” which is, ἀπεκδέχομαι apekdechomai (ap-ek-dekh’-om-ahee); to expect fully: – look (wait) for. The implication is that we are watching every day, keeping our eyes on the eastern skies expecting any moment to hear the trumpet sound and see Him step out on the clouds and descend as the Kings of Kings and Lord of Lords.
I fear that those who are not eagerly waiting, or looking for, His second coming will find that they are not spiritually ready for that time.
