Ephesians 2:8 For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith–and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God–
By definition grace is “unmerited divine assistance given humans for their regeneration or sanctification: approval, favor: a charming or attractive trait or characteristic.”
The Greek word χάρις charis (khar’-ece), is graciousness (as gratifying), of manner or act (abstract or concrete; literal, figurative or spiritual; especially the divine influence upon the heart, and its reflection in the life; including gratitude): – acceptable, benefit, favour, gift, grace (-ious), joy liberality, pleasure, thank (-s, -worthy).
Because this unmerited favor of God is a gift, it necessitates no action on our part aside from acceptance of it. In fact, when considering life before Christ, there were times when grace was extended without us knowing it had been applied.
Payment, money or otherwise, given for something done, constitutes an earned wage, thus cannot be categorized as a gift.
When a gift is given, however, there would have been a price paid by the giver. So, while the gift is free to the recipient, it does have a price attached to it.
This grace whereby we are saved, this gift from God, actually cost the ultimate price, that being the very life of His only Begotten Son, Jesus Christ. It is through faith in that, and that only, that we are saved.
