Perfect Love Drives out Fear

From Pastor’s Desk: 7-16-17

1 John 4:18-19 There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love. 19 We love because he first loved us.

A couple of days ago we looked at 1 Peter 4:8 – “Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins.” Today we see that there is no fear in love, in fact, love drives out fear.

If we believe that God love is real, that His love is real, and that His love extends to us personally, then whatever comes our way we need not fear.

The verse is pretty much to the point in saying “The one who fears is not made perfect in love.” The word “perfect” comes from the Greek word τελειόω, teleioō (tel-i-o’-o), which means to complete, that is, (literally) accomplish, or (figuratively) consummate (in character): – consecrate, finish, fulfil, (make) perfect.

As long as we allow fear to dominate we will never be complete, accomplished or consummated.
